Not an actual 'history' book, and it is fiction, but the book 'The Welsh Girl' by Peter Ho Davies is an absolutely brilliant book that pretty much nails a lot of things. Especially a pretty interesting view on the way of a Welsh farming village, although it was set during WWII.
